Turn off autorun/autoplay off

Having trouble with using other people's flash drives? You can do the following to prevent those little bastards (the malware that comes with others' USB drives not your friends or students!!) invading your PC.

Disable Through Group Policy
  • Open up gpedit.msc through the start menu search box (or the run command thingy)
  • Browse to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > AutoPlay Policies
  • Change the value of "Turn off Autoplay" to enabled.

You can choose whether to disable for just CD-ROM and removable devices, or for all devices (I suggest this).

And you are done. Next time a friend or a student brings you a flash drive, you can safely connect it to your PC.

To count the number of pages in a MS Word document without the front page you do the following Press Ctrl+F9 . Word inserts an empty set of field code braces Type an equal sign and a space Press Ctrl+F9 again. Word inserts another empty set of field code braces Type NUMPAGES and a space. Position the insertion point just between the final two right braces. Type a minus sign and a 1. Your field code for the Y page number should now look very similar to this:  { = { NUMPAGES } – 1 } Press Shift+F9 to collapse the fields. The "1" may be exchanged for any other number if you want. SECTIONPAGES may be used to get the number of pages in a section of a document.
